At Llandough Primary School, we are committed to creating an inclusive, nurturing environment where every child feels valued, supported, and able to thrive. We believe that all learners deserve access to a rich and meaningful curriculum, and we work hard to ensure that our provision is accessible, engaging, and achievable for all. Our approach is guided by the Additional Learning Needs (ALN) Code for Wales and supported by the Vale of Glamorgan Local Authority.
We recognise that every child is unique. Our staff work closely together to identify any additional learning needs as early as possible, ensuring that support is put in place promptly and effectively. Through a person-centred approach, we work in partnership with children, parents and carers, and, where appropriate, external agencies to plan the best possible support for each learner.
A person has additional learning needs if he or she has a learning difficulty or disability (whether the learning difficulty or disability arises from a medical condition or otherwise) which calls for additional learning provision. (ALP)
A child of compulsory school age or person over that age has a learning difficulty or disability if he or she:
(a)has a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of others of the same age, or
(b)has a disability for the purposes of the Equality Act 2010 which prevents or hinders him or her from making use of facilities for education or training of a kind generally provided for others of the same age in mainstream maintained schools or mainstream institutions in the further education sector.
For pupils who require some additional support, we develop One Page Profiles which helps us to understand their interests, strengths, and how they learn best. Individual Development Plans (IDPs) are developed in collaboration with families and professionals when a pupil is identified as having additional learning needs. These plans are regularly reviewed to celebrate progress, adapt support, and ensure that additional learning provision remains responsive to each child’s needs.
Our inclusive ethos means that children with additional learning needs are supported to take a full and active part in school life. High-quality teaching within the classroom is at the heart of our provision, alongside targeted support where needed. This may include small group work, tailored interventions, and the use of practical, multi-sensory resources to help children develop independence and confidence in their learning. Our learning environments are designed to be welcoming, communication-friendly, and supportive for all learners.
Our Additional Learning Needs Coordinator (ALNCo) oversees all ALN provision across the school, working closely with teachers, learning support assistants, and families. We also collaborate with a range of specialist services, including Educational Psychologists, Speech and Language Therapists, and other support services, to ensure that every child receives the guidance and support they need.
We also recognise and nurture the needs of our more able and talented learners. Through enriched learning experiences and opportunities both within and beyond the classroom, we encourage all children to challenge themselves, explore their strengths, and achieve their full potential.
At Llandough Primary, we are dedicated to removing barriers to learning and providing positive, meaningful experiences for every child. We strive to ensure that all pupils feel confident, included, and proud of their achievements as they grow into happy, capable learners.
